  • The 8TB SSDs were a great buy at $889 each from MSY, in March 2022
  • The SSD volume (cargo) is synced to Backblaze B2
  • The HDD volume (ballast) is NOT synced anywhere, this is for expendable data only

Drive replacement

Some notes about doing it, and setting up SMART/health checks etc. https://servicemax.com.au/news/synology-ironwolf-health-status/

Rebuild with SSDs

I'm sick of the constant churning noise that HDDs make, and I don't need that much capacity, so SSDs it is! Even though network speeds are limited to 1Gbps, the reduction in latency should be phenomenal.

Primary (cargo) share is now on 2x Samsung 870 QVO 8TB SSDs, using SHR RAID so I can hopefully expand the array later. I'll leave a pair of 10TB HDDs in there as a second storage pool, for bulk or non-cloud-synced storage.
